Where will we (graduates) go next?
As many of you already know, last week was the provincial budget announcements. These announcements included the dismissal of the Graduate Retention Rebate program, which provided an incentive for young graduates to stay in Nova Scotia. I grew up in New Brunswick and I love New Brunswick, with full intentions to head back to New Brunswick AFTER I got my rebate. Many students appreciate the benefits of this program and planned to stay in Nova Scotia to receive the rebate, but now the options are unlimited. I can go anywhere with my Public Relations degree, along with my fiance, who can work anywhere with his construction education and experience.
There are pros and cons to this issue. Obviously, the con is that we will not be receiving the $15,000 rebate that we were hoping for over a period of 5 years. OK fine, as infuriating as that is, I am getting the opportunity to explore wherever I wish to work. I know, I am tying myself down with marriage so my life is not as whimsical I would hope, but the opportunities are endless, nonetheless.
We can now shop for houses wherever we please. We can now search for jobs anywhere we wish. And we can now evaluate all the options, which is actually an incredible opportunity.
With this amazing realization (and honestly, a lot of stress), I have come to the conclusion that I will be accepting the Explore Bursary to study French for the summer at Laval University in Quebec City. I will be needing a higher level of French if I plan on either living in New Brunswick, or really anywhere in Canada. (Not to mention the fact that I am marrying an Acadian).
I’m sitting here thinking..holy crap..I think I just made my decision – I am going! Hmm..I should probably tell Glen..or see if he actually reads my blog.
So friends, the opportunities are endless. Lets get out there and give these opportunities a try. So thank-you Province of Nova Scotia for pushing me to make a decision, and seeing the bright future every young graduate has. Let’s give Quebec a try! And then maybe Alberta? How about Europe? or the Caribbean?
Have an awesome Wednesday friends!
Life is good.
