I’ve been training for my first half marathon for the last 12 weeks. It has been a very busy, emotional, and life changing 12 weeks. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to define myself as a “runner”, much to my surprise! I’ve chosen to finally use this definition for two reason: 1. because I run A LOT and 2. because of the following runner characteristics – dedication, high pain tolerance, confidence, and hunger level.
Dedication: Training for any race, whether it’s a 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon or Full Marathon, it takes a lot of time to be race ready. You put hours every weekend to prepare yourself for that big race. You put dedication into your meal plans. You’re whole day revolves around your pre and post run snacks. You spend time on Map My Run to find the best route for your next run. As a runner, you are dedicated to your sport and you love that.
High Pain Tolerance: With all that dedication, you are bound to experience pain at some point in your training. That could be as simple as really sore muscles or it could be something more serious like shin splints, a twisted ankle, or severe knee pain. When you are a runner, it seems as though the pain fairy is our to get you. She comes around every week to deliver her dose of torture but you smack her to the side and push through. Every runner experiences pain and most runners will keep going despite it.
Confidence: It takes a certain level of confidence to become a runner. Running doesn’t take a whole lot of brainpower but it certainly is intimidating when you have no idea what you’re doing. From the first time you lace up your sneakers to the starting line of your race, you’ve found the confidence in you to succeed.
Lastly, your bottomless pit of a stomach – your hunger level: I am constantly hungry, which is both a blessing and a curse. As soon as lunch is finished, I’m planning dinner. I’m always thinking about when I can sneak in my next snack, my afternoon sugar splurge and even my next day’s breakfast. It is actually an obsession.
After these past few weeks, these traits have helped me to realize that not only am I officially a runner but I actually enjoy running and being part of a really great community.
